Game Preview

Both teams are gearing up for their season opener in Las Vegas on Sunday night despite significant roster changes.

Ranked 13th, LSU enters the season without Jayden Daniels, who was the second overall pick in the NFL draft by the Washington Commanders. USC, ranked 23rd, lost Caleb Williams to the Chicago Bears as the first pick.

Garrett Nussmeier steps up for LSU after Daniels’ departure. Having been a backup for three years, Nussmeier made a promising start in the ReliaQuest Bowl, throwing for 395 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Wisconsin.

This victory marked LSU’s second consecutive 10-win season under head coach Brian Kelly, who aims to kick off this season with a win after initial losses in his first two seasons.

"Openers are always tricky," noted Kelly. "You shift from extensive practice to having to perform at a high level right out of the gate. It’s always a bit uncertain because you don’t know exactly what to expect."

LSU boasts a strong offensive line and talented skill players, poised to emphasize their running game this season, as stated by tackle Will Campbell.

On the defensive side, Kelly brought in Blake Baker, former Missouri coordinator, to improve a defense that struggled last season. Baker’s new defense will face its first big test against USC.

USC’s offense will be led by Miller Moss, stepping in for Williams, and dynamic playmaker Zachariah Branch. Moss aims to build on his impressive debut last season, where he threw for 372 yards and six touchdowns against Louisville in the Holiday Bowl.

"I’ve focused on my physical and emotional growth this offseason," Moss shared. "Stepping into a leadership role has been a major part of my development."

USC also revamped its defensive strategy by hiring D’Anton Lynn, former UCLA coordinator, following last season’s challenges.

This matchup between LSU and USC is one of three games involving ranked teams this weekend, adding to the anticipation.

"These matchups are exhilarating," USC coach Lincoln Riley expressed. "The build-up throughout the offseason adds to the excitement. It’s thrilling to finally see how the teams measure up against each other."
