Game Preview

As No. 7 Duke gears up for a promising season, the opener against Maine holds extra significance for heralded freshman Cooper Flagg. Set to debut on Monday in Durham, N.C., Flagg will face his home-state team, making this first game anything but typical.

Flagg’s impact is already anticipated in college basketball circles, and Duke coach Jon Scheyer is enthusiastic about his potential. “He’s a natural,” Scheyer said. “His instincts and feel for the game make him special.”

This highly-anticipated matchup, initiated by Duke reaching out to Maine, is expected to draw fans from Flagg’s home state. “There’s going to be a great buzz,” said Maine coach Chris Markwood. Flagg, who led his high school team in Maine to a state championship, views playing at Duke as a dream come true.

The Blue Devils bring depth beyond Flagg, with standout players like junior guard Tyrese Proctor, who, along with Caleb Foster, contributed significantly last season. Scheyer is still exploring rotations, giving Duke flexibility in its lineup.

Following a strong 27-9 season, Duke has bolstered its roster with transfers and incoming talent, like freshman Kon Knueppel, known for his impressive shooting range. With challenging early games against Kentucky, Arizona, Kansas, and Auburn, the team aims to build on last year’s Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Maine, coming off a 15-17 season, returns key players Kellen Tynes and Jaden Clayton, bringing experience to the court. The opener against Duke offers an exciting test for both teams, with the Blue Devils looking to set the tone for a standout season.
