Game Preview

Second-ranked Alabama faces McNeese State at home on Sunday, but it’s hard not to look ahead to a high-stakes matchup against No. 14 Purdue later in the week.

Despite Alabama’s focus on the horizon, McNeese State, led by coach Will Wade, has shown they’re no team to underestimate. The reigning Southland Conference champions earned a 30-3 record last season, securing their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 22 years before falling to Gonzaga in the opening round.

This season, McNeese State (1-1) opened with a narrow 80-73 loss to South Dakota State. “We need to improve our attention to detail, movement on offense, and ability to play through contact,” Wade said. McNeese showed their resilience by bouncing back with a dominant 111-57 win over the College of Biblical Studies.

Javohn Garcia has been a standout for the Cowboys, averaging 18 points on 60.9% shooting, while Providence transfer Alyn Breed, who sat out their last game due to knee swelling, is expected to play against Alabama.

Alabama (2-0), ranked second in the AP Top 25, opened with a commanding 56-point win over UNC Asheville and followed up with a closer 88-79 victory over Arkansas State. Mark Sears, the SEC preseason player of the year, has been key for the Crimson Tide, averaging 19.5 points per game. Freshman guard Labaron Philon has also impressed with 11 points and 6 assists per game, showcasing his two-way play under coach Nate Oats’ guidance.

Center Clifford Omoruyi has made an impact as well, averaging 14 points and 8.5 rebounds per game while shooting an impressive 91.7% from the field, one of the highest percentages in the NCAA so far this season. With Alabama’s talent on full display, Sunday’s game against McNeese State is set to be a compelling matchup before the Crimson Tide faces Purdue.
