Memphis Tigers (21-4, 11-1 AAC) – Riding an Eight-Game Win Streak
The Memphis Tigers are firing on all cylinders, extending their winning streak to eight after an 80-65 road win against South Florida. Despite a subpar shooting night (40.3% from the field, 56.7% from the line), the Tigers dominated in other key areas, securing a commanding 51-34 rebounding edge and holding South Florida to just 38.3% shooting.
Head coach Penny Hardaway celebrated his 150th career win, but his focus remains on keeping Memphis in control atop the AAC standings. With a two-game lead over North Texas, the Tigers are in prime position for a deep postseason run.
Memphis continues to thrive offensively, led by PJ Haggerty (21.5 PPG), who has been their go-to scorer all season. Tyrese Hunter (14.5 PPG) returned from injury last game and contributed 15 points, showing no signs of rust. Dain Dainja (12.8 PPG, 60% FG) has been a force inside, averaging nearly 20 PPG over his last three games.
A major advantage for Memphis is their elite 3-point shooting (40.1%), ranking fourth in the nation. If they get hot from beyond the arc, they can quickly put Wichita State in a difficult position.
Wichita State Shockers (14-10, 4-7 AAC) – Defensive Adjustments Paying Off
Wichita State comes into this matchup with confidence after winning three straight games, most recently edging out Texas-San Antonio 69-64 at home. Their defense has taken a step forward, limiting opponents to just 23.2% shooting from deep in their last three games.
However, turnovers remain a glaring issue. The Shockers committed 20 turnovers against UTSA and a staggering 22 turnovers in their first meeting with Memphis, a 61-53 road loss back on Jan. 23. If they continue to struggle with ball security, Memphis will take full advantage in transition.
Xavier Bell (14.6 PPG, 86.7% FT) is the most reliable scoring option for Wichita State, while Corey Washington (13.5 PPG, 7.7 RPG) and Justin Hill (13.3 PPG) provide additional firepower. Washington is coming off a strong 17-point, 12-rebound performance in the win over UTSA, and his ability to control the glass will be key against Memphis’ aggressive rebounding attack.
Betting Prediction & Analysis
Memphis has been covering spreads consistently and remains one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the country. While Wichita State’s defense has improved, their turnover woes and struggles against Memphis earlier this season raise concerns.
Expect the Tigers’ superior depth and shooting efficiency to be the difference-maker here. If Wichita State can keep Memphis’ transition game in check, they might hang around, but ultimately, Memphis should take control in the second half.
