LVSB here, your favorite sarcastic Las Vegas Sports Betting analyst who has watched enough college basketball to know one universal truth. If a team is undefeated, somebody somewhere is already betting against them out of pure spite.
Tonight’s drama features No. 19 Miami-Ohio heading into enemy territory to face rival Ohio in Athens. The betting board has Miami-Ohio favored by 5.5 points with a very juicy total of 160.0. Translation for gamblers: points should fly around the gym like someone forgot defense was part of the rulebook.
Let’s break down this rivalry before someone places a ten-leg parlay involving it.
Miami-Ohio RedHawks: Chasing Perfect Record
Miami-Ohio is currently 30-0. Yes, undefeated. Yes, still perfect. And yes, somewhere a sportsbook trader is sweating every one of their games.
The RedHawks became just the 15th team in Division I history to win their first 30 games after a narrow 74-72 victory over Toledo. Apparently they decided winning by two points was dramatic enough for the fans.
That victory also secured Miami’s 22nd regular season MAC championship and their first conference title in 21 years. So basically the program went from “remember them?” to “somebody stop them.”
Coach Travis Steele has made it very clear that outside criticism does not concern him. After some national talk questioning the strength of their schedule, Miami simply responded by continuing to win games. Funny how that works.
Offensively, Miami spreads the scoring around like a well-balanced buffet. In their first meeting with Ohio, the RedHawks rolled to a 90-74 victory with five players scoring in double figures.
Brant Byers led that game with 21 points while Peter Suder added 20. Suder has remained a steady scoring option and dropped 19 points in the recent win against Toledo. Antwone Woolfolk chipped in with 14 points and six rebounds.
In short, Miami is deep, balanced and annoyingly consistent for anyone trying to bet against them.
Ohio Bobcats: Underdog Battle Plan
Ohio enters the rivalry game sitting at 15-15 overall and 9-8 in conference play. In other words, they are the definition of unpredictable.
The Bobcats are coming off a 94-82 loss to UMass where things were competitive until the wheels came off late. Ohio actually held a 73-72 lead before UMass finished the game on a 22-9 run.
Jackson Paveletzke continues to be the offensive engine for Ohio. He scored 24 points with seven assists in the loss to UMass and previously put up 22 points when these teams met earlier this season.
Javan Simmons contributed 16 points along with five rebounds and three assists in that game. Kiir Kuany also made an impact in his first career start, finishing with 13 points and five rebounds.
Ohio will certainly be motivated in a rivalry game against the nation’s only undefeated team. The problem is stopping Miami’s balanced scoring attack.
LVSB Official Prediction
The line sits at Miami-Ohio minus 5.5 with a total of 160.0.
Ohio should come out aggressive at home and keep things interesting early. Rivalry games have a habit of getting weird and chaotic.
However, Miami has simply been too consistent all season. Their scoring balance and composure in close games make them extremely difficult to fade.
Expect plenty of offense and a loud atmosphere in Athens, but the undefeated RedHawks should survive the rivalry test.
Final Score: Miami-Ohio 87, Ohio 79
