Game Preview
The Miami Hurricanes recently held a players-only meeting, which is surprising given their strong position. They aren’t dealing with a losing streak, an upset, or a coach under fire. In fact, the No. 6-ranked Hurricanes (6-0, 2-0 ACC) are on a hot streak heading into Saturday’s game against Louisville (4-2, 2-1 ACC).
Led by Heisman candidate quarterback Cam Ward, Miami has scored at least 38 points in every game this season. They’ve had to make impressive comebacks, overcoming a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to Virginia Tech and a 20-point hole at Cal.
Good news for Miami came this week with the return of star left tackle Jalen Rivers, who will be playing for the first time since the opener. Head coach Mario Cristobal confirmed Rivers is "full go."
While Miami leads the overall series 11-4-1, Louisville pulled off a 38-31 road victory last year and has won four of the last six meetings. Louisville, coming off a 24-20 win over Virginia, has retooled its roster this year, adding 26 transfers, including quarterback Tyler Shough and running back Donald Chaney Jr.
Shough, now in his seventh season, previously played at Oregon and Texas Tech. He’s completing 63.4 percent of his passes with 1,674 yards, 14 touchdowns, and three interceptions this season. Chaney, a former Miami player, has 110 yards on 33 carries this year.
Louisville’s top rusher, Isaac Brown, is a freshman from Homestead, Florida, leading the team with 508 rushing yards, while standout defensive end Ashton Gillotte has two sacks this season and 24 career sacks.
Despite Louisville’s recent struggles, Miami, fresh off a bye, leads the nation in scoring at 47.7 points per game, with Ward leading in passing yards (369.8 per game). Xavier Restrepo, the ACC’s leading receiver, has 585 yards, five touchdowns, and an 18.3-yard average.
"We have a lot to prove," Cristobal said, emphasizing the leadership within the team, underscored by the players-only meeting.
