Game Preview
Sixth-ranked Oregon, now part of the Big Ten, is set to face familiar foes in struggling Michigan State this Friday night.
The Spartans will encounter their second consecutive top-10 opponent as they travel to Eugene, Oregon, to challenge the undefeated Ducks (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten). Oregon is coming off a strong performance, defeating UCLA 34-13. Meanwhile, Michigan State (3-2, 1-1) is looking to recover from a heavy 31-point loss to Ohio State under head coach Jonathan Smith, a former Oregon State coach.
Smith has firsthand experience defeating the Ducks, having led the Beavers to an upset victory in 2022 while being named Pac-12 Coach of the Year.
Oregon coach Dan Lanning sees some similarities between Smith’s current team and those he previously coached. "They have a solid run game and create unique challenges that differ from typical college football," he noted.
As the Ducks aim for their first Big Ten home victory, they will be playing at Autzen Stadium for the first time since September 7. Oregon is favored by 23.5 points and boasts an impressive 42-3 home record since 2017.
Lanning expressed enthusiasm for returning to their home field, emphasizing the opportunity for improvement after a successful outing against UCLA, where their defense held the Bruins scoreless.
Michigan State, coming off a 38-7 defeat to No. 3 Ohio State, is hoping to secure its first regular-season win on the West Coast since 1957. The Spartans have struggled offensively, ranking 97th in rushing and 104th in scoring, while also battling turnover issues.
Smith recognizes the challenge posed by Oregon’s explosive offense and talented quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who leads the nation in completion percentage. Despite his past ties to Oregon, Smith insists his focus remains on preparing his team for the game.
The last matchup between Oregon and Michigan State occurred in the 2018 Red Box Bowl, where the Ducks narrowly won 7-6 on a late touchdown pass from Justin Herbert.
