Game Preview

Just under nine months ago, Michigan and Washington faced off in the College Football Playoff national championship game in Houston, where the Wolverines secured the title with a decisive 34-13 victory.

This Saturday, the two teams will meet again as No. 10 Michigan (4-1 overall, 2-0 Big Ten) heads to Seattle to take on the Huskies (3-2, 1-1) for the first time since both joined the same conference.

Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore, who served as an assistant on Jim Harbaugh’s staff last year, downplayed the significance of the rematch.

“No, it’s just the next game,” Moore stated. “We played them last year in the national championship, but both teams are different now. We just need to focus on winning this game.”

The Huskies have undergone significant changes following coach Kalen DeBoor’s departure to Alabama, with many starters either graduating, turning pro, or transferring.

Jedd Fisch, who came over from Arizona, has taken the reins at Washington. The Huskies’ two losses have been by a narrow combined total of eight points, including a 21-18 loss at Rutgers last Friday, where they outgained their opponents 521-299 but converted only two of four red-zone opportunities.

"We’re one play away from being 5-0," Fisch remarked, referencing their narrow defeats. "We need to find a way to execute those crucial plays. If we can do that, we have the potential to be very competitive."

Running back Jonah Coleman, who followed Fisch from Arizona, is averaging 104.2 rushing yards per game, while quarterback Will Rogers III, a transfer from Mississippi State, boasts a 74.8% completion rate with 1,354 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Michigan’s only loss came in Week 2 against Texas, where they fell 31-12.

The Wolverines have since rebounded with three consecutive victories, including a hard-fought 27-24 win over Minnesota last Saturday. Kalel Mullings rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns in his starting debut, helping Michigan extend its school-record conference winning streak to 27 games dating back to 2021.

"When I found out I was starting, it didn’t change much for me," said Mullings, who leads the team with 540 rushing yards and six touchdowns. "I always prepare like I’m going to be on the field for every play."

Saturday will mark Michigan’s first road game of the season.

"You have to prioritize your defense and run game, and be disciplined in everything," Moore said. "It’s going to be an exciting environment. Our players are eager to hit the road; it minimizes distractions and keeps everyone focused. Many have come to me saying they’re ready to take this show on the road."

Wolverines offensive lineman Giovanni El-Hadi added, "It’s exciting to experience a different atmosphere. We know it will be loud and intense. This is a rematch of the national championship, and we’re ready to make their field feel like our home. Let them boo us; we’re prepared for anything."
