Game Preview

The Milwaukee Brewers will turn to newly acquired right-hander Frankie Montas on Thursday as they aim to complete a three-game sweep of the struggling Atlanta Braves.

Milwaukee has taken the first two games of the series with decisive victories, winning 10-0 on Tuesday and 8-5 on Wednesday. The Brewers hold a comfortable six-game lead in the National League Central.

Atlanta, currently on a four-game losing streak, has slipped to the third and final NL wild-card spot, just a half-game ahead of the New York Mets.

Montas (5-8, 5.03 ERA) will face Atlanta’s Charlie Morton (6-6, 3.94) in the final regular-season encounter between these teams. This will be Montas’s 21st start of the season and his second since joining the Brewers from the Cincinnati Reds. In his Brewers debut last Friday, Montas pitched five-plus innings, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out five and walking none in a win over the Washington Nationals.

"I’ve been in similar situations before," Montas said. "My approach was to not overthink it. Just be myself, enjoy the game."

Montas previously faced the Braves on July 24 in his final start for the Reds, allowing four runs on ten hits over 4 1/3 innings, with three walks and six strikeouts.

Morton, who struggled in a recent start against the New York Mets, rebounded with a solid performance against the Miami Marlins on August 1, allowing just one unearned run on five hits and two walks while striking out six. He had been struggling with home runs but managed to avoid them in his most recent outing.

Morton holds a 5-8 record with a 3.91 ERA in 17 career starts against the Brewers, though he hasn’t faced Milwaukee since 2022. He will need to contend with a Brewers lineup that has been hitting well, with 16 hits in each of the last two games.
