Game Preview
Despite a rollercoaster first half, the Chicago Cubs are still in contention for a National League wild-card berth as they gear up for a three-game home series against the Milwaukee Brewers starting Monday night.
Currently 3 1/2 games behind in the wild-card race, the Cubs managed to clinch a crucial victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday. Trailing 1-0 and with only one hit by the ninth inning, Nico Hoerner sparked a late rally, doubling and scoring the tying run to break the Cubs’ 18-inning scoreless streak. He later drew a bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning to secure a 2-1 walk-off victory.
"We’ve got to win baseball games," Cubs manager Craig Counsell stated, emphasizing the slim margin for error. Counsell, who managed the Brewers from 2015-2023, highlighted the urgency of winning after failing to clinch the series against Arizona.
The Cubs showed promise by sweeping a three-game series against the AL East-leading Baltimore Orioles and splitting a four-game set with the St. Louis Cardinals just before the All-Star break—all away games. Nonetheless, they struggled in the first two games post-break against the Diamondbacks.
Reflecting on their recent road performance, Nico Hoerner from Marquee Sports Network remarked, "That road trip was really impressive and showed a lot of character. We have another big series coming up—we’re going to embrace it, have fun, and win some ballgames."
Chicago will start right-hander Javier Assad in the series opener. Assad (4-3, 3.27 ERA) had a short outing in his last start on July 13 against the Cardinals, surrendering three runs over 2 1/3 innings without a decision in a 5-4 defeat. He holds a career 3.00 ERA in three appearances against Milwaukee, including one start.
On the opposing side, the Brewers are set to start rookie right-hander Tobias Myers. Myers (6-3, 3.13 ERA) last pitched on July 10, delivering eight scoreless innings in a 9-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, demonstrating significant improvement from his 5.03 ERA in 26 starts at Double-A Biloxi last season.
