Game Preview

Investing $1 million in Jurickson Profar has proven to be one of the best moves for the San Diego Padres in recent memory.

Profar continued his standout season on Tuesday night, hitting a three-run homer in the eighth inning to propel San Diego to a 7-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins. This win marked the Padres’ ninth series victory in their last ten since the All-Star break.

The Padres will aim for a series sweep on Wednesday with a late-afternoon matchup.

Just under a year ago, Profar was released by the struggling Colorado Rockies and later signed by San Diego for his second term with the club. The Padres brought him back on a one-year, $1 million contract in February, with the potential for an additional $1.5 million in incentives.

Profar’s impressive stats speak for themselves: a .290 batting average, 20 home runs, 76 RBIs, and a .387 on-base percentage, which ranks second in the National League, showcasing that he’s giving the Padres excellent value for their investment.

“Believing in my ability has been key,” Profar stated. “This year, I’m playing with my instincts and a lot of confidence, and I know my manager supports me.”

His latest heroics helped the Padres maintain their lead in the National League’s wild-card race, staying one game ahead of Arizona with a record of 22-6 since the All-Star break.

San Diego will turn to knuckleballer Matt Waldron (7-10, 4.29 ERA) to seek the series sweep. Waldron is looking to bounce back from a tough outing against the Rockies, where he allowed seven runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

The Twins will counter with Simeon Woods Richardson (4-3, 3.77 ERA), who is coming off a solid performance in a win against Texas. This will be his first matchup against the Padres.

Minnesota has dropped three straight games, including a frustrating loss to the Padres on Tuesday, where the bullpen faltered again, allowing Profar’s homer to cost them the lead. This loss prevented the Twins from gaining ground in the American League wild-card race.

"Games like this happen," said Twins manager Rocco Baldelli.

In injury news, Carlos Correa is experiencing discomfort from plantar fasciitis but reported feeling better than before, even though he hasn’t run the bases since his last appearance on July 12.
