Game Preview
The San Diego Padres, coming off their first series loss in over a month, might also be without their shortstop when they face the Minnesota Twins in a three-game series starting Monday night.
Shortstop Ha-Seong Kim sustained a shoulder injury during Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to the Colorado Rockies. He hurt his right shoulder diving back to first base on a pickoff attempt and had to leave the game. Padres manager Mike Shildt indicated that Kim will be evaluated further on Monday to determine the severity of the injury.
If Kim, who is batting .233 with 11 home runs, 47 RBIs, and a team-high 22 stolen bases, is sidelined, the Padres could shift Xander Bogaerts or Manny Machado to shortstop. Bogaerts has extensive experience at the position from his time with the Boston Red Sox, while Machado has played shortstop for various teams including San Diego.
Despite losing two out of three games to the Rockies, San Diego remains at the top of the NL wild-card standings, holding a one-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks and trailing the Dodgers by three games in the NL West.
In Monday’s opener, Michael King (10-6, 3.19 ERA) will pitch for the Padres. King is coming off a strong performance against the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he threw six scoreless innings, allowing seven hits but no walks while striking out 10. King has a 2.45 ERA in three career appearances (one start) against the Twins.
The Twins, who missed a chance for a four-game sweep against the Texas Rangers on Sunday, are currently clinging to the American League’s second wild-card spot. They lost 6-5 in 10 innings after blowing a 4-0 lead, with a throwing error by Jose Miranda allowing the winning run.
Minnesota is 2 1/2 games behind the Yankees and Orioles for the top wild-card position and just two games back of the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central. Rookie right-hander Zebby Matthews (1-0, 3.60 ERA) will make his second MLB start on Monday. Matthews earned a win in his debut last Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits over five innings against the Kansas City Royals.
Before Sunday’s loss, the Twins were 17 games over .500 for the first time this season. They are 11-6 this month and will begin a nine-game homestand after facing the Padres.
"We’re in every game," said Twins manager Rocco Baldelli. "We’re going to continue to be in every game."
