Game Preview
No. 9 Missouri will face its toughest challenge yet this season as the Tigers head to College Station, Texas, to take on No. 25 Texas A&M on Saturday.
After starting the season with four home games, the Tigers (4-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) will now play in front of a packed crowd at Kyle Field against the Aggies (4-1, 2-0).
"It’s going to be hot," Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz noted. "With temperatures expected to reach 92 degrees, this will be our hottest game of the year. Plus, we’ll have to deal with 105,000 fans trying to create distractions for our team. Blocking out that noise will be essential."
Another challenge for Missouri is preparing for two potential starting quarterbacks. Texas A&M coach Mike Elko indicated that Conner Weigman might return to action.
"We’re not trying to play games with that," Elko said. "It’s just about his shoulder injury. He’ll be a game-time decision again this week."
However, Drinkwitz anticipates that dual-threat quarterback Marcel Reed will start. Reed has thrown for 585 yards and six touchdowns while rushing for 230 yards and two more scores.
"On their depth chart, it lists the other kid as the starter, but to me, that’s just semantics," Drinkwitz remarked. "They’ve built their offense around Reed, and it’s different from what they showed earlier in the season."
The Aggies have averaged 5.5 yards per carry this season, with running backs Le’Veon Moss (471 yards, three touchdowns) and Amari Daniels (211 yards, two touchdowns) contributing significantly alongside Reed.
Moss has become a more reliable performer this year.
"I think he feels better physically—stronger and with greater stamina than ever before," Elko said. "This consistency has improved his running angles and entry points."
Missouri has also leaned heavily on its running game, with Nate Noel leading the charge with 441 yards and a 6.4-yard average. A total of 10 different ball carriers have combined for a 5.2 average.
The Tigers have yet to establish a dominant passing game. Quarterback Brady Cook has completed 92 of 134 passes for 946 yards and four touchdowns, with top receiver Luther Burden III catching 19 passes for 257 yards and four touchdowns.
"They have an outstanding wide receiver group," Elko stated. "Luther Burden is the standout. He had over 1,200 yards last year and is on track to match that this season. He’s an electric player primarily in the slot."
Missouri’s offensive line also boasts three experienced starters in their third year.
