Game Preview

The Washington Capitals aim to extend their home winning streak as they host the Nashville Predators on Wednesday night.

Washington has won six straight at home since a season-opening loss to the New Jersey Devils, tallying four or more goals in five of those victories. They’ve scored 34 of their 46 goals this season at Capital One Arena, averaging 4.86 per game—ranking second in the NHL.

A key to Washington’s success has been Alex Ovechkin, who’s recorded 12 of his 14 points at home with five goals and seven assists. "He’s making great plays," said top-line center Dylan Strome, emphasizing Ovechkin’s impact beyond scoring.

The Capitals had a three-game winning streak snapped by a 4-2 loss to Carolina on Sunday. During that streak, Ovechkin, Strome, and Aliaksei Protas combined for 22 points (eight goals, 14 assists). Ovechkin’s performance earned him NHL’s First Star of the Week after five goals in four games.

Meanwhile, the Predators are struggling despite offseason additions of Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault, and defenseman Brady Skjei. With a 4-7-1 record and last place in the Central Division, Nashville has faced a scoring drought, sitting 29th in the league for goals per game (2.42). Following a 3-0 loss to the LA Kings, frustration is high. "Frustration’s everywhere," center Ryan O’Reilly noted.

Nashville’s recent form has been rocky, with three losses in their last four games and only eight goals in those outings. Stamkos and Marchessault have struggled to make an impact, as Stamkos has just two goals and five points in 12 games.

This matchup could favor the Capitals, who are dominating offensively at home, while the Predators search for a solution to their scoring issues.
