NC State is always the bridesmaid, never the bride. That is the unfortunate truth for this ACC team that plays in the same division as Clemson.
The Wolfpack typically fly under the radar, but this was nine-win team in three of the last five years under coach Dave Doeren. They’ve also had a winning record in seven of the last eight years and they have the second most wins in the ACC in that span.
Last year they were a 9-3 team, they beat Clemson for the first time in nine years and two of their three losses came on the road to Miami and Wake Forest by a combined four points.
Returning is one of the best quarterbacks in the conference, Devin Leary, a veteran offensive line and eight starters on a very good defense.
Question marks remain in the run game and at the very top of the pecking order at receiver.
But the schedule is also on the lighter side, so add it all up and the ceiling is high for this team in 2022-23.

This is a solid team and a veteran team, that also has no experience in title games in their own conference, let alone in the playoffs. It’s too big a leap to see them winning it all in 2022-23

They are the third favorite to win the ACC this year, trailing strong favorite Clemson and second favorite Miami. They beat Clemson last year in a double overtime thriller and still couldn’t win their own division. This year the big game is on the road. I don’t think they’ll get it done, but at these odds, it’s still worth a flyer.

Again, Clemson is the beast of the Atlantic and they figure to be much improved this year after a couple of down years (by their standards). So it is a reach, but they do figure to be the Tigers’ biggest obstacle to the title.

The opener against East Carolina on the road is no gimme, but who are we kidding? If the Wolfpack can’t pull that one off, then they really aren’t the team we think they are capable of being. Their most challenging out of conference game is week three versus Texas Tech and they don’t start their conference schedule until the all-important October 1 game at Clemson.
I think they have a great chance to come into that game undefeated at 4-0. Being at home for Florida State, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest also helps.
Their path to a ten-win season is strong.

2022 Heisman Contenders: Devin Leary 5000/1
Leary had a terrific season last year, throwing for 3,433 yards with 35 TDs and just 5 INTs. He’s able to complete deep throws and make plays with the very best in the nation. But he does not run the ball, and the receiver talent is questionable to put him in the category as a true Heisman contender.
