Game Preview

The Cincinnati Bengals, buoyed by high aspirations but facing uncertainties, will square off against a New England Patriots team stepping into a new chapter, as they kick off their 2024 campaign this Sunday.

Joe Burrow, the Bengals’ quarterback, will see his first regular-season action since a wrist injury last November that needed surgical repair. Burrow played only the first preseason series and spent the rest of the time conditioning through joint practices with the Bears and Colts. Fully recovered from ACL and MCL injuries suffered in 2020, Burrow is optimistic about his readiness for the season opener.

"My health is good. I feel strong and ready to tackle what’s necessary," Burrow stated. "Recovery from injuries like these means some days are better than others, but you improve as the season progresses."

Cincinnati’s Super Bowl prospects may also depend on wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, who has been embroiled in a contract dispute. Chase, limited in Wednesday’s practice after sitting out training camp and preseason, remains uncertain for Sunday’s game.

"Ja’Marr’s performance, when he plays, is always top-notch," said Burrow. "His status for Sunday will be decided then."

Chase is seeking a deal comparable to that of Justin Jefferson from the Vikings, who secured a four-year, $140 million extension this summer.

Additionally, Tee Higgins is doubtful for the game due to a hamstring injury, while rookie Amarius Mims and Kris Jenkins will miss out due to injuries.

On the Patriots’ side, the post-Bill Belichick era begins under new head coach Jerod Mayo. Following a dismal 4-13 record last year, New England is looking to rebuild, starting with Drake Maye, this year’s third overall draft pick. Veteran Jacoby Brissett will start as quarterback in the season opener.

Mayo emphasizes the importance of dominance at the line of scrimmage for success.

"Our focus is on dominating the line on both sides and excelling in special teams," Mayo remarked. "Facing a team like the Bengals, known for their potent offense and assertive defense, requires us to control the game’s flow from the front lines."

New England will be without guard Sidy Sow due to an ankle injury, and several other players are listed as questionable for the game.
