Game Preview
The New Jersey Devils ended the Florida Panthers’ three-week winning streak with a decisive 4-1 victory on Tuesday.
Now, the Devils aim to hand Florida consecutive losses for just the second time this season as the teams meet again Thursday in Sunrise, Fla. Notably, New Jersey has a history of breaking Florida’s streaks, having halted their nine-game run last season.
“It took hard work, competitiveness, and resilience,” Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe said. “We took a step forward, understanding what’s needed to challenge the league’s best.”
Jack Hughes, who continues his goal-scoring streak, scored in the first period, marking his fourth goal in as many games and setting a franchise record as the fastest player to reach 300 career points. Timo Meier added a key goal in the second, while Paul Cotter and Ondrej Palat secured the win in the third. New Jersey has now won six of its last eight games.
Florida’s Sam Reinhart, who netted his team-leading 12th goal, looks forward to the rematch with playoff-like intensity. “Opportunities like this are exciting,” Reinhart said. “It’s a fun challenge, and both teams will make adjustments for Thursday.”
Reinhart, currently on an eight-game point streak, has tallied seven goals and five assists in that span. The Panthers might also welcome back Sam Bennett, who missed Tuesday’s game due to an upper-body injury but could be ready for Thursday, depending on his status in the morning.
Sergei Bobrovsky, set to start in goal, brings a five-game winning streak of his own, having bounced back since being pulled against Minnesota on Oct. 22. He’ll be keeping an eye on Jesper Bratt, New Jersey’s top assist leader, who added two assists Tuesday and has excelled in recent matchups with Florida.
Goalie Jacob Markstrom, who made 34 saves on Tuesday for his fifth win in six starts, holds a 6-5-1 record against the Panthers, who originally drafted him in 2008.
