Game Preview
The New Orleans Pelicans, aiming to improve their late-game performance with offseason addition Dejounte Murray, have already shown promise despite losing Murray to a fractured hand for 4-6 weeks.
After finishing last season 0-24 in games they trailed after three quarters, the Pelicans rallied from a nine-point deficit in the fourth to secure a 105-103 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday. The two teams will clash again Sunday in Portland.
Head coach Willie Green emphasized their focus on clutch play, saying, "In tight situations, it’s about no turnovers, quality shots, and finishing on defense with rebounds. We accomplished that tonight." Brandon Ingram’s late-game heroics, including a go-ahead jumper with 4.9 seconds left, held off Portland’s final push.
With Murray absent, second-year guard Jordan Hawkins stepped up, delivering 24 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter. "He hit timely shots when we needed them," Green noted. Meanwhile, Zion Williamson, despite struggling offensively, still tallied 16 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists, finding ways to make an impact.
Portland, though letting a game slip in which they led by as many as 16, played a gritty match following a tough 140-104 loss to Golden State. Coach Chauncey Billups praised his team’s effort, led by Jerami Grant with 34 points and a career-best eight 3-pointers.
“We led most of the game but lost some control in the end. Staying poised down the stretch will be key," Grant said.
