Game Preview
The New York Liberty are on the verge of securing the WNBA’s top position as they prepare to face the Dallas Wings on Tuesday in Arlington, Texas. This encounter is the first of two matchups between these teams within a three-day span.
Currently leading the league, the Liberty (29-6) are three games ahead of the Minnesota Lynx with five matches remaining. They come off a narrow 75-71 victory against the Las Vegas Aces. Breanna Stewart led with 21 points and 11 rebounds, with Jonquel Jones contributing 15 points and eight boards. Sabrina Ionescu played a key role with 14 points against the defending champions.
“We managed to keep our cool,” Ionescu explained. “We made smart plays, ensured the right people had the ball, and secured crucial stops. It wasn’t the prettiest of victories, but winning tough games like this is crucial.”
Conversely, the Wings (9-26) return home after a disheartening 92-77 defeat to the Chicago Sky, which dashed their playoff hopes. The loss was their fourth consecutive, officially eliminating them from postseason contention. Arike Ogunbowale scored 23 points, with Natasha Howard adding 17 and Satou Sabally contributing 12. Despite a late rally, Dallas couldn’t overcome a substantial deficit.
After reaching the semifinals last year, Dallas has struggled near the bottom of the standings for much of the season, plagued by injuries. They showed brief signs of resurgence with three consecutive home wins in late August but have since faltered.
Rookie Jacy Sheldon is expected to see increased playing time as the season winds down.
“We’ve stayed focused on what we can manage,” Sheldon noted. “There have been a lot of uncontrollable factors this season, but we’ve remained united as a team.”
The Liberty have already secured two victories against Dallas earlier this season in New York on August 20 and 22.
