Game Preview

The Paris Olympics may have concluded, but Saturday’s matchup between the Las Vegas Aces and the New York Liberty will showcase a host of Olympic stars.

Both teams will feature ten Olympians, including six gold medalists from Team USA, as they push towards the playoffs.

The Liberty, recently bolstered by four Olympic returnees, delivered a dominant performance with a 103-68 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday, their first game since mid-July.

New York coach Sandy Brondello, who led Australia to bronze in Paris, was pleased with the team’s strong start. Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu, key figures in the U.S. gold medal win, combined for 45 points in the game, with Stewart leading with 27 points and Ionescu adding 18 and six assists.

Nyara Sabally and Leonie Fiebich, who represented Germany, also made contributions to the Liberty’s win. The Liberty, currently leading the league with a 22-4 record, previously defeated the Aces 90-82 in June.

The Aces, having not played since mid-July due to sending six players to the Olympics, will have their Olympic stars—A’ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young, and Megan Gustafson—back on the court. Wilson, who shone with Team USA, leading them to gold with 21 points and 13 rebounds in the final, is a frontrunner for her third MVP award.

Wilson, the league’s top scorer and rebounder, is looking forward to facing her former teammates Ionescu and Stewart as both teams vie for a WNBA championship.

"It’s all about respect," Wilson said. "We’ve achieved gold, and now it’s time to focus on the WNBA title."
