Game Preview
The New York Liberty travel to face the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday night as the WNBA resumes play after the Summer Olympics break.
Fresh from their gold medal win with Team USA, Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu lead the top-ranked Liberty (21-4) into their third clash of the season with the Sparks. Stewart and Ionescu, both projected to play in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, were key in securing Team USA’s eighth consecutive gold medal.
"I know the 61 wins in a row is really impressive, but this one is special just for our group and what we’ve been able to accomplish in a short amount of time," Stewart said of the gold medal win. "Any time we have the opportunity to represent the USA, we have the biggest target on our back."
For the Liberty, Ionescu is averaging 19.8 points and 6.1 assists per game, while Stewart adds 19.3 points, nine rebounds, and two steals per game.
The Sparks (6-18) are led by WNBA All-Star Dearica Hamby, who is putting up 19.2 points, 10 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. Hamby, who recently earned a bronze medal with the USA 3×3 basketball team at the Paris Olympics, has been praised by Sparks GM Raegan Pebley for her leadership and resilience.
The Liberty defeated the Sparks in their previous two meetings this season, with scores of 93-80 and 98-88. New York has won nine of its last 11 games, while Los Angeles has lost 10 of its last 13. The Liberty are 9-3 on the road, while the Sparks are 4-8 at home.
