Game Preview
Courtney Williams and the Minnesota Lynx split their first two games against the New York Liberty in the WNBA Finals but are now focused on avoiding a return trip to New York.
As they prepare for Game 3 at home on Wednesday, the Lynx aim to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series. With Game 4 also set in Minneapolis, the team is determined to close out the series on home turf.
"That’s the mindset right now," Williams said. "I keep reminding my teammates, ‘We can’t go back to New York.’ It’s a tough environment there with their fans and home-court advantage, so we’re aiming to finish it here in front of our crowd."
The Lynx pulled off a dramatic comeback in Game 1, overcoming an 18-point deficit to win 95-93 in overtime, while the Liberty responded with an 80-66 victory in Game 2.
Breanna Stewart of the Liberty reflected on her team’s improved performance, saying, "We found our rhythm in Game 2, stepping up on both ends of the court. But this is the Finals—it’s only going to get tougher."
Minnesota’s Napheesa Collier has been dominant in the playoffs, leading the league with 25.2 points per game, while also contributing 9.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and solid defensive stats. Stewart, New York’s star, is averaging 19.9 points and 8.3 rebounds, with teammate Sabrina Ionescu adding 19.8 points, 5.0 boards, and 4.9 assists.
Ionescu believes there’s more potential for the Liberty to unlock. "After watching Game 2, we realized we still have room to improve offensively, which is exciting going into Game 3."
As the Lynx prepare to defend their home court, Collier expressed excitement about playing in front of their fans, who haven’t witnessed WNBA Finals action since 2017.
"We’ve got a huge crowd coming," she said. "They’re like our sixth player. The energy will be electric."
