The Knicks barely had time to unpack their gym bags before hopping on a plane to Philadelphia. Because nothing says fun like defending Tyrese Maxey on tired legs.
Jalen Brunson dropped 40 points in that loss, which normally guarantees at least a celebratory postgame meal. Translation: the defense RSVP’d no.
Mikal Bridges and Karl Anthony Towns each scored 22, while Josh Hart casually posted a 15 point triple double. The problem is minutes. Brunson, Bridges, and Hart all crossed the 40 minute mark. On a back to back. That is not ideal when the spread is tight and the opponent is rested.
The Knicks have lost two of three after an eight game heater. The offense will travel. The question is whether the legs and defensive intensity do.
Philadelphia 76ers
Philadelphia returns home favored by 2.5 with a total of 222.5. The Sixers just finished a 3 and 2 Western trip with wins over the Clippers, Warriors, and Suns. That is not sightseeing. That is business.
Tyrese Maxey has been carrying a heavy scoring load, including a 30 point effort in Portland despite missing Joel Embiid and Paul George. Kelly Oubre Jr. chipped in 19, and role players like Justin Edwards and MarJon Beauchamp provided useful minutes.
The concern is health. Embiid is questionable with a knee issue. George remains suspended. But at home, with a rest advantage and revenge motivation after dropping one earlier in the season to New York, the Sixers are positioned well.
Prediction
This feels like a grind. The Knicks will score. They always do when Brunson is cooking. But back to backs, heavy minutes, and shaky defense are not a great formula on the road.
