Game Preview

Just one week after a shocking loss to Northern Illinois at home, 18th-ranked Notre Dame aims to bounce back during their visit to Purdue this Saturday.

Following an unexpected defeat to the Huskies—who were heavy underdogs last weekend—the Fighting Irish fell 13 places in the rankings. The loss was sealed when a 62-yard field goal attempt was blocked in the final moments, concluding the game 16-14 in favor of Northern Illinois.

As Notre Dame (1-1) sets its sights on Purdue (1-0) who easily handled Indiana State 49-0 in their opener, head coach Marcus Freeman stresses the importance of moving forward and addressing the issues from last week’s upset.

"It’s tough," Freeman remarked. "To experience such a high and then a significant low in just two weeks is challenging. We have to accept it, both coaches and players, and correct our course. We’ve faced adversity before, and we need to get back to playing our brand of football—something we are certainly capable of doing."

Meanwhile, Purdue’s head coach, Ryan Walters, sees the upcoming game against a traditionally dominant Notre Dame as a crucial opportunity to earn respect and potentially secure a notable upset. After enjoying a bye week, the Boilermakers are well-prepared and eager for the challenge.

"This matchup has been a key focus for us," said Walters. "We’re geared up for it, especially to gain some recognition."

Purdue quarterback Hudson Card had an impressive start, completing 24 of 25 passes for 273 yards and four touchdowns. The Boilermakers showcased a balanced attack, with strong performances also noted in the rushing game and defense, particularly from edge rusher Will Heldt, who notched two sacks.

Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard, in contrast, has had a modest start to the season, and the pressure is on him and the offense to perform. Running back Jeremiyah Love, who has consistently scored and leads the team’s rushing efforts, will be critical in stabilizing the offensive play.

"We have to assume they’ll come looking to make a statement," Walters added about Notre Dame. "A team like that, coming off such a loss, will be determined to prove a point right from the start."
