Game Preview

When No. 5 Notre Dame travels to Los Angeles to face rival USC for their 95th meeting, the stakes couldn’t be higher for the Fighting Irish, who are eyeing a College Football Playoff berth.

Notre Dame (10-1) jumped a spot in the CFP rankings after dismantling then-No. 19 Army 49-14. Since their unexpected loss to Northern Illinois in September, the Irish have reeled off nine straight wins, making them one of the hottest teams in college football. A win over the Trojans would likely lock Notre Dame into the CFP, especially since this is their last chance to impress the selection committee without a conference championship game.

“This will be our toughest challenge yet,” said Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman. “USC is better than their record shows, and they’ve been strong at home.”

USC (6-5), despite a turbulent season, is hitting its stride. The Trojans bounced back from a 4-5 record with two crucial wins, securing bowl eligibility. The key to their turnaround has been the emergence of quarterback Jayden Maiava, who accounted for all four touchdowns in a win over Nebraska and sealed a rivalry victory against UCLA with a late-game strike.

Notre Dame enters the game on a dominant streak, winning every matchup since mid-October by at least 18 points. Their defense has been exceptional, allowing just 11.6 points per game (second nationally) and forcing 26 turnovers, led by safeties Xavier Watts and Adon Shuler.

For bettors, this game hinges on whether USC can crack Notre Dame’s suffocating defense and if Maiava can continue his recent success against a top-tier opponent. The Trojans have been more competitive at home, and rivalry games often deliver surprises. However, Notre Dame’s consistent dominance and the CFP implications make them the clear favorite.

USC coach Lincoln Riley acknowledged the magnitude of the rivalry but kept his focus measured. “This game is historic and always carries weight. But for us, it’s about playing our best football and respecting the moment.”

Expect a fiercely contested game with Notre Dame looking to cover the spread and punch their playoff ticket while USC aims to play spoiler.
