Game Preview
Last week, the New York Jets brought in a new head coach, and now they’ve added a new receiver.
The Jets (2-4) will try to turn things around as they prepare for a Sunday night road game against the Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2), who are expected to start Russell Wilson at quarterback.
After losing to the Minnesota Vikings on October 6, the Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh. Following another narrow 23-20 defeat to the Buffalo Bills on Monday, New York traded for star wide receiver Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders, reuniting him with quarterback Aaron Rodgers from their successful days with the Green Bay Packers.
Interim coach Jeff Ulbrich confirmed that Adams will play Sunday as the Jets aim to snap their three-game losing streak.
“I’m ready to go,” Adams said. “I’ve been moving around well, and I’m excited to get back out there.”
Adams had a stellar six-year run in Green Bay, catching 581 passes for 7,192 yards and 69 touchdowns with Rodgers as his quarterback. He continued his strong play with the Raiders, though a hamstring injury sidelined him for the last three games this season.
Rodgers is eager to have his former go-to target back on the field, saying, “Davante brings a lot of energy and experience. He’s a proven star and a great locker room guy.”
Despite Rodgers at the helm, the Jets have struggled offensively, averaging 18.8 points per game (22nd in the league) and 304.3 total yards (also 22nd). Rodgers has thrown for 1,387 yards with nine touchdowns and five interceptions. Running back Breece Hall was a bright spot against Buffalo, tallying 169 yards from scrimmage.
On the Steelers’ side, Russell Wilson is expected to take over as starting quarterback after practicing with the first-team offense this week, replacing Justin Fields. Wilson, who missed time with a calf injury, hasn’t played this season but has been practicing fully for two weeks.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin noted, “It’s about shaking off the rust, but Wilson’s experience makes him ready.”
Fields, who had started the first six games, has thrown for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and rushed for 231 yards with five scores this season. Both Wilson and Fields were acquired in the offseason, Wilson from Denver and Fields from Chicago.
The Steelers will be without several key players, including running back Cordarrelle Patterson and tackle Dylan Cook, while the Jets’ secondary is banged up with cornerback Michael Carter II ruled out and D.J. Reed listed as questionable.
The Jets have won three of the last four meetings between the two teams.
