Game Preview

The Atlanta Braves are set to send top Cy Young candidate Chris Sale to the mound on Wednesday night as they look to close the gap on the visiting New York Mets in the battle for the National League’s final wild-card spots.

After defeating the Mets 5-1 in the opener of their three-game series, the Braves (86-71) are trailing New York (87-70) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (87-71) in the postseason race. Atlanta aims to secure a playoff spot for the seventh consecutive season.

"We need to focus on going 1-0 tomorrow," said Braves manager Brian Snitker. "Big hits, key plays, and a strong start are essential."

Sale (18-3, 2.38 ERA) will face fellow left-hander David Peterson (9-3, 3.08) in the matchup.

Having won his last eight decisions, Sale leads the National League in wins, ERA, and strikeouts (225 in 177 2/3 innings), putting him in contention for the Triple Crown for pitchers. He ranks second in WHIP (1.01) and fourth in opponent batting average (.216).

In his most recent outing against Cincinnati, Sale pitched five innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six.

Earlier this season, Sale faced the Mets once, getting no decision after tossing 7 1/3 innings and allowing two runs on two hits with nine strikeouts on July 25, though the Braves lost 3-2. In four career starts against New York, he holds a 1-0 record with a 2.70 ERA.

Peterson, on the other hand, struggled in his last start against Philadelphia, allowing five runs (four earned) in 3 2/3 innings. However, he was solid in his previous outing on September 15, surrendering just one run over 7 1/3 innings.

He also faced the Braves on July 28, suffering his first loss of the season after giving up four runs in five innings. Peterson has made 11 appearances (10 starts) against Atlanta, posting a 3-5 record with a 5.33 ERA.

The Mets opted to start Peterson instead of Jose Quintana, who has been exceptional recently with a 4-0 record and a 0.28 ERA over his last five starts.

"We considered various factors, including matchups and what was best for the team," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza explained. "While Quintana has been throwing well, Peterson has also performed admirably."

Atlanta will need to contain center fielder Michael Harris II, who went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run on Tuesday, extending his hitting streak to eight games with an impressive .486 batting average (18-for-37) during that stretch.

The Braves announced on Tuesday that injured third baseman Austin Riley (fractured right hand) will not be available if they make the playoffs. However, right-hander Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder inflammation) threw a side session and could be activated as soon as this weekend.

The Mets are also close to having Francisco Lindor (sore back) return. He didn’t play on Tuesday but was ready to step in as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning had the game situation allowed.
