Game Preview

After breaking their streak of playoff disappointments, the Milwaukee Brewers are aiming to secure their first postseason series victory in six years when they face the New York Mets on Thursday in the decisive game of the National League wild-card series.

The NL Central champion Brewers, who had lost their previous 20 playoff games when trailing heading into the seventh inning, pulled off a comeback for a 5-3 win on Wednesday night, leveling the best-of-three series at one game apiece.

Garrett Mitchell hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning for the go-ahead runs, while rookie Jackson Chourio homered twice, helping Milwaukee snap a six-game playoff losing streak.

Rookie right-hander Tobias Myers (9-6, 3.00 ERA) will start for the third-seeded Brewers, facing left-hander Jose Quintana (10-10, 3.75) for the Mets.

This marks the Brewers’ sixth postseason appearance in seven seasons, although they have lost five consecutive playoff series since sweeping the Colorado Rockies in the 2018 NL Division Series, where they then fell to the Dodgers in the NL Championship Series.

In contrast, the Mets have not won a playoff series since they swept the Chicago Cubs in the 2015 NLCS.

During the regular season, the Brewers had a strong showing against the Mets, going 5-1 and winning two of three in their last series in Milwaukee.

Chourio, at just 20, is the second-youngest player in MLB history to hit two home runs in a postseason game, trailing only Andruw Jones, who was 19 when he accomplished the feat in the 1996 World Series.

“I think I still feel the adrenaline,” Chourio said after the game through an interpreter. “It was a very special moment that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

Mitchell, who returned from a finger fracture that sidelined him for the first 84 games of the season, came in as a pinch runner and later hit a home run on his first pitch as the designated hitter.

“I just show up every day ready to compete and do whatever I can to help the team,” Mitchell said. “I’m just happy to be here and grateful for the opportunity.”

While the Brewers capitalized on power hitting, the Mets have yet to hit a home run in the first two games of the series.

“It’s tough to hit home runs against an elite pitching staff,” said Mets manager Carlos Mendoza. “We did well to adjust and put the ball in play, but today we didn’t succeed.”

Myers aims to extend his solid performance from the end of the regular season, having gone 3-1 with a 3.03 ERA in his last six outings, including a one-hit four-inning relief appearance against the Mets last Saturday.

In that game, Quintana pitched for the Mets, allowing two runs in 4 1/3 innings while striking out nine Brewers.

The former All-Star finished the regular season strong, going 4-1 with a 0.74 ERA in his last six starts. In the playoffs, however, he is 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in five career appearances.

Quintana holds a 9-7 record with a 2.98 ERA in 23 games against Milwaukee but has not beaten them in six attempts over the past five years.
