Game Preview

New York Mets right-hander Luis Severino light-heartedly remarked on Friday that he wasn’t worried about the New York Yankees because they rely heavily on just two hitters, Juan Soto and Aaron Judge. Over the past month, the Yankees have indeed found it challenging to get production from players beyond Soto and Judge, resulting in them losing their first-place standing. However, after a particularly strong performance, the Yankees are looking to regain momentum starting with Tuesday’s home game against the Mets.

Last month, the Yankees lost both games to the Mets at Citi Field, including an 8-run deficit in the first game that ended 9-7 and a 12-2 blowout in the second.

Despite a tough stretch with 20 losses in 30 games since reaching a 50-22 record on June 14, the Yankees showed signs of recovery with a 9-1 win on Monday against the Tampa Bay Rays. This victory, which split a four-game series at home, featured five home runs—a season-high—and 15 hits.

In this series, Soto shone brightly, collecting 11 hits in 18 at-bats, including homers in the seventh and eighth innings. Austin Wells, Anthony Volpe, and DJ LeMahieu also contributed home runs, marking significant milestones for both Volpe and LeMahieu.

Reacting to Severino’s earlier comments, Soto stated, "They can think whatever they want. At the end of the day, we trust and believe in every single guy here, and I think we have everything we need to show them that we can do it."

Yankees manager Aaron Boone echoed this sentiment, focusing on the broader season goals rather than the rivalry with the Mets. "It’s not even so much about the Mets, it’s just where we are in the season and what we’re fighting for," Boone said. "They’re just the next ones in the way… It’s not overly personal for me."

Meanwhile, the Mets have improved to 29-15 since a tough loss to the Dodgers on May 29 and are 12-9 since their last encounters with the Yankees. Coming off a 6-4 win against the Miami Marlins that split a four-game series, the Mets have seen key contributions from Francisco Lindor, who has excelled since being moved to the leadoff spot, and Jeff McNeil, who hit a two-run homer in the latest game against Miami.
