Game Preview

In the weeks leading up to their initial meetings at Citi Field, the New York Mets appeared on track for another disappointing season, potentially triggering a sell-off at the upcoming trade deadline. Conversely, the New York Yankees seemed set to dominate the American League. However, the roles have somewhat reversed, with the Mets now contenders in the National League wild-card race and the Yankees struggling to break free from a prolonged slump. This sets the stage for the final game of their season series Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.

Following a narrow 3-2 victory on Tuesday, the Mets have raised their record to 52-48, reaching four games above .500 for the third time this season. This win followed a challenging travel schedule from Miami, where they secured a 6-4 victory and returned home around 5 a.m. due to a delayed flight.

Jeff McNeil’s sixth-inning tiebreaking two-run homer has put the Mets in a position to achieve a 4-0 sweep against the Yankees for 2024, mirroring their 2013 season sweep. "We’ve had travel delays before," McNeil remarked, reflecting on his recent performance of four homers in five games since the All-Star break. "We were all prepared, and we showed it out there."

Since a 10-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 29, which dropped their record to 22-33, the Mets have gone 30-15, showcasing significant resilience.

Meanwhile, the Yankees, who started the season strong with 50 wins in their first 72 games, have faltered significantly since mid-June, posting a 10-21 record over their last 31 games, including a 5-12 record at home.

In Tuesday’s game, while Gleyber Torres homered and Alex Verdugo contributed an RBI double, the Yankees struggled offensively, going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Notably, Juan Soto was 0-for-4 until a ninth-inning walk, and Aaron Judge walked four times before striking out in the ninth against Jake Diekman.
