Game Preview

Jesse Winker has experienced a transformation in the eyes of New York Mets fans. After hitting a dramatic walk-off homer in the ninth inning on Wednesday, securing a 4-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles and clinching the series, Winker has gone from being a target of boos to a potential fan favorite.

As the Mets embark on a crucial road trip, starting with a four-game series against the San Diego Padres on Thursday, Winker’s new fans will be eager for more clutch performances. The Mets currently sit 1.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves for the final wild-card spot in the National League.

Winker’s pinch-hit home run off Seranthony Dominguez marked the Mets’ second walk-off homer in just three games, electrifying the Citi Field crowd. Reflecting on the moment, Winker said, “A full blackout moment… I just wanted to help any way I can. I was just really happy.”

Acquired from the Washington Nationals last month, Winker is batting .288 in 18 games with the Mets, contributing as both an outfielder and occasional designated hitter. The walk-off was his 12th homer of the season and his first with New York.

The Mets will begin their road trip with Luis Severino (8-6, 3.91 ERA) on the mound, looking to replicate his last outing—a 4-0 shutout against the Miami Marlins on Saturday where he allowed just four hits and struck out eight. Severino has a solid track record against the Padres, allowing only one hit and two runs (one earned) in 6 2/3 innings during a previous game on May 27, 2023.

Meanwhile, the Padres aim to bounce back after a disappointing 11-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday, which halted their chance at a series sweep. Dylan Cease, who last pitched in an 8-3 victory against Colorado, will take the mound for San Diego. Cease (12-9, 3.46 ERA) is looking to avenge an earlier loss to the Mets where he gave up seven runs in just 3 2/3 innings.

Despite the recent loss, the Padres have posted a strong record of 22-7 since the All-Star break and are tied with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the first wild-card spot in the NL. They have enjoyed considerable success at home, with 22 wins in their last 32 games, energized by enthusiastic sellout crowds. Third baseman Manny Machado commented, “Playing in front of this crowd gives us that extra motivation.”
