Game Preview

It’s been so long since the New York Yankees reached the World Series that Giancarlo Stanton was still a 19-year-old prospect in the Florida Marlins’ system the last time they made it.

With four home runs already this postseason, Stanton has helped push the Yankees to a commanding 3-1 lead over the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Championship Series. Game 5 will take place on Saturday in Cleveland.

Stanton’s most recent blast, his third of the series, was a three-run shot that powered New York to an 8-6 win in Game 4. One more win sends the Yankees to their first World Series since 2009.

“I just try to gather as much information as I can, watch all the film, take all the swings I need. I exhaust it all, and that’s why I’m exhausted after these games,” Stanton said, reflecting on his approach. He hit six homers in the 2020 postseason. “You won’t always perform well, but if I have all the info, I’ll be in a good place."

Stanton also appeared to clinch Game 3 with a late go-ahead home run, but Cleveland tied it with two outs in the ninth on a Jhonkensy Noel homer and won in the 10th on a David Fry walk-off.

Undeterred, the Yankees jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in Game 4 thanks to a Juan Soto homer, never falling behind. Stanton’s three-run homer made it 6-2, though Cleveland once again rallied, tying the game in the eighth. New York sealed the win with two runs in the ninth, putting Cleveland on the brink of elimination.

The Yankees will start left-hander Carlos Rodon (1-1, 4.66 ERA) in Game 5. He went 16-9 with a 3.96 ERA in the regular season and earned a win in Game 1 of the ALCS, giving up just one run over six innings.

"I’ll review Game 1, see how I sequenced my pitches," Rodon said. "I’ll be ready to compete the same way."

The Guardians will counter with right-hander Tanner Bibee (0-1, 3.60 ERA), who went 12-8 with a 3.47 ERA this year but struggled in Game 1, lasting only 1 1/3 innings and taking the loss after allowing three runs (two earned).

Cleveland’s bullpen, taxed from the last two games, will need Bibee to go deeper. Closer Emmanuel Clase has also been shaky, surrendering two runs in each of the last two games.

“Everyone’s tired, we’ve used the bullpen a lot because we’ve had to. It’s just how we’re built,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt admitted.

Cleveland tied Game 4 thanks to a two-run double by Josh Naylor and an eighth-inning break when David Fry’s grounder brought in the tying run. This time, however, they couldn’t finish the comeback and now face elimination in Game 5.

“We’ll show up ready to win,” Vogt said. “That’s what this team is all about.”
