Game Preview
A high-stakes clash between the leading contenders for the American League MVP and Cy Young awards is set to enhance the excitement of this year’s MLB Little League Classic.
On Sunday night in Williamsport, Pa., New York Yankees’ slugger Aaron Judge, who is in contention for a Triple Crown, will go up against Detroit Tigers’ ace Tarik Skubal.
Judge has had notable success against Skubal, hitting .455 with five hits in 11 at-bats, including two homers and two doubles.
Judge, who leads the majors with 44 home runs and 111 RBIs and is second in batting average with a .332 mark, is eagerly anticipating the event. “I’ve seen it for years and always hoped we’d play there,” Judge said. “It’ll be great to interact with the kids and put on a show.”
Skubal, boasting a 14-4 record and a 2.53 ERA, has been exceptional lately, winning four of his last five starts and leading the league in ERA. He has been dominant in recent outings, including two wins over Seattle where he struck out 18 in 13 innings.
In his previous encounter with the Yankees on May 5, Skubal allowed just two runs and struck out 12 in a six-inning performance, though Detroit lost 5-2. Skubal has a 3.43 ERA across four career starts against New York.
Skubal is also excited about the upcoming game. “It’ll be a lot of fun,” he said. “It’s a big opportunity for our team and the organization.”
The Yankees will have Marcus Stroman (8-6, 4.01 ERA) on the mound. Stroman, who rebounded from a rough outing against Toronto to limit Texas to one run in five innings last Sunday, has a solid track record against Detroit with a 1.74 ERA in six career starts.
Detroit has recalled top prospect Spencer Torkelson from Triple-A Toledo. After spending 58 games in the minors to refine his swing, Torkelson made an immediate impact with a double and triple in Saturday’s 4-0 win. Detroit, having lost the series opener 3-0, has won five of its last six games.
