Game Preview

No. 19 Texas and Ohio State kick off their seasons on Monday in Las Vegas, facing off in the Hall of Fame Series. Both programs are leaning on key transfers to reshape their rosters.

Texas, under head coach Rodney Terry, finished last season 21-13 with a 9-9 Big 12 record and reached the NCAA Tournament’s second round, where they fell to Tennessee. Terry, now in his first full season, is focused on strengthening team culture and consistency. “We were building a culture, setting standards,” Terry said. “If you maintain continuity, you give yourself a chance.”

The Longhorns return key players, including reserve guard Chendall Weaver and forward Kadin Shedrick. Texas added impact transfers like Oregon State’s Jordan Pope, Arkansas’ Tramon Mark, and Kansas State’s Arthur Kaluma. They’ll also be led by freshman Tre Johnson, the nation’s No. 5 recruit.

Ohio State begins its first full season with coach Jake Diebler, who took over after Chris Holtmann’s departure. The Buckeyes ended last season at 19-12 and reached the NIT quarterfinals. Diebler aims to build continuity, as the Buckeyes’ roster has talent but limited experience together. “We’re versatile and athletic, but our inexperience is a question mark,” Diebler noted. “I want our players confident and aggressive.”

The Buckeyes’ lineup includes returning junior guard Bruce Thornton, their leading scorer from last season, and South Carolina transfer Meechie Johnson Jr. at guard. Micah Parrish from San Diego State, Sean Stewart from Duke, and Aaron Bradshaw from Kentucky will round out the starting lineup.

With these revamped rosters, both Texas and Ohio State are looking to establish early-season momentum in a high-stakes opener.
