Game Preview

After a monumental victory against Ohio State, Oregon head coach Dan Lanning and his No. 2 Ducks face a quick turnaround as they prepare to take on Purdue in West Lafayette, Indiana, on Friday night.

The challenge for the Ducks (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) is to avoid a letdown following their impressive win over the then-No. 2 Buckeyes. This matchup marks their first long-distance trip as a Big Ten team, transitioning from the Pacific Northwest to the Midwest.

Quarterback Dillon Gabriel, named Co-Offensive Player of the Week in the Big Ten, was instrumental in leading Oregon to its highest-ranked home victory ever. He completed 23 of 34 passes for 341 yards and two touchdowns, adding a 27-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Gabriel has consistently thrown for multiple touchdowns in each game this season and ranks second nationally with a 76.1 percent completion rate. Oregon’s skill players complement him well, and the offensive line has yet to allow a sack since the second game of the year. Despite missing star defensive lineman Jordan Burch last week due to injury, he is expected to return later this season.

Lanning acknowledged the challenges of preparing for a Friday game: “It’s not hard for us to refocus, but we need to fit a lot into a short time,” he said. “The key is to stay consistent and thorough without overwhelming the players.”

Earlier this season, Oregon played on a Friday, defeating Michigan State 31-10 at home on October 4.

Purdue (1-5, 0-3) is looking to bounce back from five consecutive losses but showed promise in a narrow 50-49 overtime defeat to then-No. 23 Illinois. The Boilermakers rallied from a 24-point deficit in the second half, scoring two touchdowns in the final five minutes to take a 43-40 lead before the overtime period.

Ryan Browne, who made his first start at quarterback last week, will again lead Purdue against Oregon. He threw for 297 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 118 yards against Illinois.

Coach Ryan Walters took over play-calling duties during the Illinois game and will continue this week. He praised Browne’s performance, crediting his preparation for the strong showing.

Walters expressed frustration over comments suggesting his team had given up, emphasizing to his players that they should never let others perceive them as quitting during tough times: “In life, as in football, adversity is guaranteed. At the very least, you should fight.”

The last meeting between Oregon and Purdue was in 2009, where the Ducks secured a 38-36 victory at home, leading the all-time series 2-1.
