Game Preview

New York Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette was left frustrated after a lopsided loss, despite the scoreboard reflecting only a two-goal difference. The Rangers, now looking to rebound from two losses in their last three outings, aim to tighten up defensively when they face the Ottawa Senators on Friday.

“There’s detail to defense, but it’s also an attitude,” Laviolette said after the Rangers’ 5-3 defeat to the Washington Capitals on Tuesday. “Good teams start with solid defense, which leads to playing offense. When defense is lacking, you end up spending too much time in your own end.”

Indeed, New York faced relentless pressure, outshot 46-19 by the Capitals and committing 20 giveaways. Still, there were standout moments for the Rangers: Will Cuylle netted his second goal in as many games, and Filip Chytil added to his recent hot streak with his third goal in four games. Chris Kreider also recorded his sixth goal of the season, tying Artemi Panarin, who saw his eight-game point streak snapped.

Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin, a former Vezina Trophy winner, boasts a solid record against Ottawa, stopping all 25 shots in their last matchup—a 4-0 shutout in April. He could be in for a challenge Friday, as Ottawa’s offense has fired up, scoring 34 goals in their last seven games. The Senators opened and closed that stretch with eight-goal showings, including an explosive win over the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday.

Ottawa stars Tim Stutzle and Brady Tkachuk both scored twice in the victory, while Stutzle extended his assist streak to five games, and Claude Giroux pushed his point streak to seven games.

With the Senators’ high-powered offense and the Rangers’ defensive adjustments on the line, this matchup offers plenty of intrigue for hockey bettors.
