Game Preview
No. 4 Penn State looks to strengthen its College Football Playoff résumé when it travels to face Minnesota in a key Big Ten matchup on Saturday.
The Nittany Lions (9-1, 6-1 Big Ten) have navigated a tough schedule, but head coach James Franklin insists the focus remains squarely on the Golden Gophers this week.
“As you know, I don’t love to talk about anything other than the team we’re playing,” Franklin said. “We’re locked in on Minnesota. If I start discussing other things, then the players and coaches lose focus, and that’s not the recipe for success.”
Penn State rebounded from its Nov. 2 loss to Ohio State with dominant wins over Washington and Purdue. Last Saturday, Drew Allar threw for three touchdowns, and Tyler Warren delivered a career performance with eight catches for 127 yards and a rushing touchdown in a 49-10 rout of the Boilermakers.
Franklin praised Warren, who has tied the program record for 100-yard games by a tight end. “Tyler came back with a high draft grade last year, and he’s proving he’s one of the best. I think he’ll be the first tight end drafted.”
Minnesota (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) aims to bounce back after its four-game winning streak ended with a 26-19 loss to Rutgers. Former Gophers quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis threw three touchdowns to lift the Scarlet Knights, leaving Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck to recalibrate during a bye week.
“The extra time helped us reset mentally and physically,” Fleck said. “We also worked on areas where we needed improvement and got a jump-start on Penn State prep.”
The Golden Gophers will lean on Darius Taylor, who has a rushing touchdown in four consecutive games, and Max Brosmer, who has completed 67.1 percent of his passes for 2,251 yards, 14 touchdowns, and four interceptions this season.
Penn State’s defense, paired with its efficient offense, positions the Nittany Lions as strong favorites, but Minnesota’s preparation and home-field advantage could make this a closer contest than expected. Bettors will be watching to see if Penn State can maintain its playoff push or if Minnesota can pull off the upset.
