Game Preview
Penn State looks to keep its playoff hopes alive with a road victory over struggling Purdue on Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind.
The Nittany Lions (8-1, 5-1 Big Ten) remain at No. 4 in the College Football Playoff rankings despite a 20-13 loss to then-No. 4 Ohio State on Nov. 2. They rebounded with a dominant 35-6 win over Washington last weekend, featuring two touchdowns from standout tight end Tyler Warren.
Quarterback Drew Allar praised Warren’s versatility: "We try to get him the ball as much as we can." Warren leads Penn State with 59 receptions, four receiving touchdowns, and three rushing scores, averaging 7.2 yards per carry. Coach James Franklin also touted Warren as a top candidate for the Mackey and Hornung Awards.
Penn State’s offense, fueled by Allar’s 70.3% completion rate and running backs Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton, aims to secure a strong playoff position. "Winning consistently in college football is tough," Franklin said.
Meanwhile, Purdue (1-8, 0-6) has struggled mightily, losing eight straight games since a season-opening shutout win over Indiana State. The Boilermakers have been outscored 80-0 in losses to ranked opponents Oregon and Ohio State.
Last week, Purdue’s offense faltered in a 45-0 loss to the Buckeyes, managing just 206 total yards. Quarterback Hudson Card threw for 108 yards with an interception, while Devin Mockobee led the ground game with 73 yards on 13 carries.
Coach Ryan Walters acknowledged the challenges: "We’ll continue to work on alignment, assignment, and execution to minimize errors against top teams."
With Purdue reeling and Penn State focused on a playoff run, Saturday’s matchup heavily favors the Nittany Lions as they aim to dominate both sides of the ball.
