Game Preview

Randy Arozarena has reinvigorated the Seattle Mariners’ offense, helping them score six or more runs in seven of their last eight games since his arrival from the Tampa Bay Rays.

On Saturday, Arozarena contributed two doubles and scored twice, including the decisive run on a bases-loaded walk to Mitch Haniger in the bottom of the 10th inning, leading the Mariners to a dramatic 6-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. This victory came after Seattle had trailed by five runs.

The Mariners, having won six of their past eight games, are now back in first place in the American League West. They aim for a three-game sweep of the Phillies on Sunday afternoon in Seattle.

Before acquiring Arozarena, the Mariners had only managed 11 runs in six games. Arozarena, who is hitting .333 and has scored nine runs in seven games with Seattle, has brought new energy to the team.

Manager Scott Servais praised the impact of Arozarena and Victor Robles, saying their energy and entertainment value are benefiting the team. Haniger’s solo homer in the fifth inning and Arozarena’s leadoff double in the sixth were crucial in overcoming a 5-0 deficit.

The game-winning walk-off was Haniger’s seventh career walk-off, tying him with Jim Presley for the franchise record. "A win is a win, but hitting in a walk-off feels a little better," Haniger quipped.

The Phillies, who lead the National League East, have now lost six games in a row and are 3-11 since the All-Star break. Manager Rob Thomson remains confident in his team’s talent despite the recent struggles.

All-Star reliever Jeff Hoffman, who had previously given up only five earned runs all season, struggled on Saturday, allowing four runs. Thomson expressed trust in Hoffman despite the rough outing.

Alec Bohm drove in three runs for the Phillies, and Bryce Harper ended a career-worst 0-for-24 slump with a leadoff double in the fourth inning.

Sunday’s series finale will showcase All-Star right-handers Zack Wheeler (10-5, 2.94 ERA) of the Phillies and Logan Gilbert (6-7, 3.11 ERA) of the Mariners. Both pitchers are looking to rebound from poor performances in their previous starts. Wheeler, making his debut against Seattle, and Gilbert, who has a 7.20 ERA in two prior starts against the Phillies, will each seek a strong showing to end the series.
