Game Preview

The Philadelphia Eagles, already locked into the playoffs, aim to secure their 11th consecutive victory and potentially clinch the NFC East when they visit the Washington Commanders on Sunday. The showdown promises high stakes as both teams chase their postseason goals under the spotlight of late December football.

Eagles Eyeing the No. 1 Seed

At 12-2, the Eagles hold a three-game lead over Washington (9-5) in the division. While a win on Sunday would seal the NFC East title, Philadelphia has bigger aspirations: the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs. With the Detroit Lions faltering and their roster depleted by injuries, the Eagles are well-positioned to take the top spot.

Coach Nick Sirianni, however, insists on keeping the team focused on the task at hand.
“We know winning this game gets us closer to our goals, but our preparation is what matters most,” Sirianni said.

Commanders Fighting for Their Playoff Lives

The Commanders, rejuvenated after a dismal 4-13 record in 2024, have won two straight and are eyeing a wildcard berth. A win over Philadelphia, coupled with losses by Atlanta, Los Angeles, or Seattle, could lock in their playoff spot. Conversely, a loss could turn next week’s primetime matchup against the Falcons into a must-win scenario.

The last time these teams met in Week 11, the Eagles pulled off a 26-18 win after a controversial fourth-down decision by Washington coach Dan Quinn backfired. This time, Washington hopes the addition of cornerback Marshon Lattimore—recently acquired and making his debut—can make a difference.

“He’s a game-changer,” said Sirianni. “Adding someone like Lattimore gives their defense more flexibility.”

Key Matchups

The Eagles have dominated the rivalry, winning three straight in Washington. Quarterback Jalen Hurts and star running back Saquon Barkley will look to exploit a Commanders defense that has struggled in key moments. Barkley, who tallied 146 yards and two touchdowns in their previous matchup, remains a central figure in Philadelphia’s offense.

“Barkley is at his best when it matters most,” said Quinn. “We need discipline on every snap to contain him.”

Washington, led by quarterback Jayden Daniels, faces a tough challenge against an Eagles defense ranked first in the NFL in both yards (275.6) and points allowed (17.6) per game. The Commanders will need to capitalize on every opportunity to avoid repeating last season’s late-season collapse.

Injury Updates

Both teams are dealing with key injuries. The Commanders are monitoring tight end Zach Ertz and safety Jeremy Chinn, both in concussion protocol. For Philadelphia, wide receiver Britain Covey (neck) is out, and safety Sydney Brown (concussion) remains questionable. Defensive stars Bryce Huff and Jonathan Allen will miss the game but are making progress toward returning.

Betting Insights

Philadelphia enters the game as 4.0-point favorites, with the total set at 46.0. The Eagles’ dominant defense and ability to control games late make them a strong pick to cover. However, Washington’s desperation for a playoff spot and their history of keeping games close against division rivals suggest they won’t go down without a fight.

Prediction

The Eagles have been nearly unstoppable, and their balanced attack should be enough to outpace Washington. Expect Hurts and Barkley to lead the way offensively while the defense keeps Daniels and the Commanders in check.
