Detroit Pistons Preview: The Hospital Unit That Forgot How to Lose
The Detroit Pistons walked into Chicago on Wednesday with a roster that looked like a preseason scrimmage lineup and still handled the Bulls like they were a minor league warmup act. Detroit did not need a single starter. They did not need a single recognizable face. Honestly, they barely needed warmups.
Paul Reed, making his first start since his Philadelphia days, morphed into a combination of Dennis Rodman, Magic Johnson and a caffeinated Tasmanian Devil. He delivered 28 points, 13 boards, six assists and four steals like he was trying to earn a lifetime contract before the first media timeout.
Coach J B Bickerstaff praised his team for playing with heart, grit and something he called “identity,” which is coach language for “we have no idea how we won but let us absolutely pretend this was part of the plan.”
Daniss Jenkins continued his Cinderella run with 18 points and 12 assists. This man has now joined the official list of Players Who Should Not Be This Good But Somehow Are.
Detroit remains riddled with injuries like they are starring in a medical reality show. Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, Tobias Harris, Ausar Thompson, Jaden Ivey and Isaiah Stewart all sat out. At this point, the Pistons may want to lease out the empty seats on their bench as coworking space.
Yet they have won eight straight and are 1-0 in NBA Cup play, which is basically the NBA version of a midseason party that suddenly matters because money is involved.
Philadelphia 76ers Preview: The Team That Refuses To Die
The Sixers are also shorthanded, with Joel Embiid nursing a knee. But did they crumble? Fold? Wave a white flag? No. They erased an eight point fourth quarter deficit against Boston and won anyway.
Quentin Grimes said the team has gotten “too comfortable” with late game comebacks. Translation: Please stop giving us heart attacks every night.
Justin Edwards erupted for a season high 22 points and Nick Nurse praised him like a proud parent watching a toddler win the neighborhood talent show.
And do not forget, Philadelphia just lost to Detroit last Sunday. Revenge will absolutely be on the menu.
Prediction
Two battered teams. One rivalry brewing. One weird NBA Cup game with way too much pride on the line. Detroit has been shockingly good even with half the team in medical boots, and Philadelphia keeps needing miracles to survive fourth quarters.
Detroit survives again.
