Game Preview

The Phoenix Mercury, featuring three Olympic gold medalists, return to WNBA action on Thursday night as they face the Chicago Sky.

Kahleah Copper, a standout for the Mercury, was pivotal in Team USA’s gold medal win over France, securing the victory with two crucial free throws in a 67-66 game. She leads the Mercury this season with an average of 23.2 points per game.

Copper’s teammates, Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi, also played for Team USA. While Taurasi did not participate in the final, she earned her record sixth gold medal, the most by any USA Basketball player. Despite being 42, Taurasi remains a key player for the Mercury, averaging 16.1 points per game before the break.

The Sky, currently 10-14, are led by rookie Angel Reese, who set a WNBA record with 15 consecutive double-doubles. Reese, averaging 13.5 points per game, is third in scoring for the Sky, while Chennedy Carter leads with 16.4 points per game. Chicago has struggled recently, losing three of their last five games before the break. They lead the league in offensive rebounds, thanks to Reese, but lag behind in 3-point attempts and shooting efficiency.

Reese is a promising candidate for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, expressing her ambition to represent the U.S. in the future.

The Mercury, who improved from a 3-5 start to win four of their last six games before the Olympic break, will play the Sky twice in four days, starting with Thursday’s game in Chicago and continuing with a home matchup on Sunday.
