Game Preview
As the NFL season kicks off, the Atlanta Falcons are gearing up to face the Pittsburgh Steelers with both teams introducing veteran quarterbacks at the helm of new offenses.
The Falcons have brought in Kirk Cousins, a seasoned quarterback who signed from Minnesota with a hefty $180 million deal for four years. Last year, Cousins played just eight games due to an Achilles tear but managed to throw for 2,331 yards and 18 touchdowns. He steps into a Falcons team that is buzzing with potential, replacing Desmond Ridder as they aim for their first playoff run since 2017.
"This perception that we’re set to be outstanding is just that, a perception," Cousins remarked. "It’s up to us to translate that into reality on the field."
Sunday also marks a significant shift in coaching for the Falcons, with Raheem Morris taking the reins as head coach, a role he previously held on an interim basis in 2020. Morris, having spent the last three years as the Rams defensive coordinator, expressed a mix of anticipation and confidence pre-game.
"On game day, right before the anthem, that’s when it really hits me," said Morris. "But there’s a calmness in the preparation, knowing you’ve done the work."
Across the field, the Steelers are also undergoing transformations, starting with their quarterback. Russell Wilson, having had a tumultuous stint with the Denver Broncos, has now joined Pittsburgh, chosen over Justin Fields as the starting quarterback. Wilson’s arrival is part of a broader offensive overhaul led by former Falcons coach Arthur Smith.
"I’m here to win," Wilson stated. "We’ve worked incredibly hard from the offseason through to camp, and I’m eager to get started with this team."
However, Wilson is currently dealing with a calf issue and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game.
The Steelers are dealing with other injury concerns too, with starting left guard Isaac Seumalo and center Nate Herbig sidelined due to injuries, putting further pressure on their offensive line.
The Falcons-Steelers matchup is a storied one, though historically lopsided in Pittsburgh’s favor, with the Steelers leading the all-time series 15-2-1. The Falcons last defeated the Steelers in 2006, making this game an opportunity for Atlanta to challenge historical trends under their new leadership.
