Game Preview
The Chicago Cubs, after notching 99 runs in 10 games, stumbled in their first two games against the Pittsburgh Pirates, managing only three runs combined.
Facing the Pirates (65-73) again Wednesday night, the Cubs (71-68) hope to reignite their offense in the final game of their 13-game season series, currently tied at 6-6.
Chicago’s recent offensive dry spell follows a loss of 5-3 on Monday and a shutout of 5-0 on Tuesday, complicating their playoff chase as they now trail the Atlanta Braves by 4.5 games for the National League’s last wild-card spot.
"We started strong in the first few innings without scoring, and couldn’t really keep that momentum," said Cubs manager Craig Counsell. "We need to find ways to turn those early chances into runs."
Looking to end on a high note, the Cubs will hand the ball to Shota Imanaga (11-3, 3.14 ERA), aiming for his third consecutive victory. Imanaga previously went four scoreless innings against Pittsburgh on May 18, yielding just four hits and striking out seven.
Imanaga comes into this game following a solid start where he allowed three runs across six innings against the Washington Nationals last Friday, marking his second straight quality start.
On the other side, the Pirates are playing the role of spoilers well, having won three out of their last four games, including the current series against Chicago. Jared Triolo boosted Pittsburgh’s efforts with a three-run homer Tuesday, his total RBI against the Cubs this season reaching nine.
Pittsburgh will start Domingo German (0-0, 6.11 ERA), who is back on the mound after a shaky outing against the Cleveland Guardians, where he surrendered two runs in three innings. German struggled in his previous appearance against the Cubs, giving up eight runs in less than three innings.
Meanwhile, the Cubs are cautiously optimistic about Justin Steele’s arm health following a positive MRI, with further evaluations ongoing to determine his immediate future.
"We’re still gathering information and opinions, but Justin feels good, and the initial results are promising," Counsell noted. "We’re holding off on placing him on the IL as we continue to monitor his condition."
