Pittsburgh Penguins Breakdown
The Pittsburgh Penguins keep stacking wins, but even they admit it has not always been pretty. They have taken four of their last five, yet their latest victory was a roller coaster. Pittsburgh jumped out to a three goal lead in Tampa Bay, only to cough it up before Evgeni Malkin bailed them out late. The team will gladly bank the points, but they also know they need a more complete effort if they want to keep up with a powerhouse like Dallas.
Special teams have been productive with six power play goals in the last three games, but the Penguins have also been careless. Thirteen penalties over their past two outings is asking for trouble and giving up forty shots to Tampa Bay shows just how much they rely on Tristan Jarry to keep them in control. Jarry has been sharp with a four start win streak and a 2.61 goals against average, but he cannot carry the workload alone.
The road form has been strong with Pittsburgh winning three straight away from home. They even snapped a four game losing streak against Dallas last season with Sidney Crosby scoring three times in that matchup. Still this Stars team is far more dangerous now and demands a sixty minute effort.
Dallas Stars Breakdown
Dallas enters this matchup playing like they are allergic to losing hockey games. No team has earned more points since late October and their current run features a nine game stretch without a regulation loss and thirty six goals scored in that span. They have won three in a row at home and are steamrolling opponents despite dealing with injuries to major contributors such as Thomas Harley, Matt Duchene and Tyler Seguin.
The Stars keep moving because their depth produces relentlessly. Mikko Rantanen is on a tear with ten points in his last five games, while Jason Robertson has found the net fifteen times in his last thirteen outings. That is the definition of a heater. Dallas also enjoys the luxury of steady goaltending from Jake Oettinger who owns a 1.80 goals against average in his five game win streak and has stopped forty six of his last forty seven shots. Even backup Casey Smith has been excellent with a 2.16 goals against mark.
Dallas is not satisfied either. Coach Glen Gulutzan continues to push his players knowing this is the time of year when elite teams separate themselves.
Prediction and Betting Outlook
Pittsburgh has the talent to compete but their inconsistency and penalty trouble is a dangerous combination when facing a clinical Dallas squad. The Stars are rolling at home with overwhelming scoring depth and elite goaltending. The moneyline price reflects that and Dallas is rightly the favorite. The total at six lines up well with two capable offenses, but Dallas’ strong defensive structure leans this toward a controlled scoreboard.
