Game Preview

The Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins meet on Friday in a clash of rivals headed in different directions this season.

The Capitals have surged to a 9-3-0 start, securing a 3-2 victory over the Nashville Predators on Wednesday. They sit in third place in the Metropolitan Division, just two points behind the top. The Penguins, however, have struggled, sitting near the division’s bottom with eight losses in their last 10 games, including a 5-1 defeat to the Hurricanes on Thursday.

Washington’s offense is thriving, averaging 4.08 goals per game — a sharp improvement from last season’s 2.63 average. The Capitals’ top line, featuring Alex Ovechkin, Dylan Strome, and Aliaksei Protas, has been instrumental, with Ovechkin scoring six goals in his last five games. Ovechkin is sharing the spotlight with Connor McMichael, who also has eight goals, while Tom Wilson and Nic Dowd provide additional firepower.

Logan Thompson, acquired from the Vegas Golden Knights, has been a reliable presence in the net for Washington, boasting a perfect 6-0-0 record so far.

The Penguins, on the other hand, are looking to rebound after Thursday’s loss to Carolina. Despite strong contributions from stars Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh ranks 20th in the NHL with just 2.8 goals per game and has not scored more than three goals in a game since mid-October. Defensively, they are allowing an average of 3.8 goals, ranking 30th in the league.

The Capitals hope to continue their winning ways, while the Penguins look to disrupt Washington’s momentum and turn their own season around.
