For the first time in ages, the Pittsburgh Steelers enter this new season with expectations and territories which are unfamiliar to them. They will start the year without a familiar face under center as QB Ben Roethlisberger called it a career at the end of last season after 18 years in the league. The most glaring outlook for the storied franchise is that they are expected to finish at the bottom of the AFC North which hasn’t happen since 1988.
The reason why the expectations are so low for the Steelers is that none of the three quarterbacks on the team is a clear-cut favorite to man the position. Mitchell Trubisky has now sewn the journeyman tag on his jersey while Mason Rudolph is still trying to make a name for himself in the league. Then, there is Kenny Pickett, who was selected 20th overall this past draft and appears to be the future behind center. Coach Mike Tomlin won’t hesitate to play whoever emerges as the best selection to win games in the present-day.
Whoever gets the nod under center, he will have great talent at the receiving position with Diontae Johnson (1,161 YDS, 8 TDs) and Chase Claypool (860 YDS, 2 TDs) along with RB Najee Harris, who amassed 1,200 yards with seven scores in his rookie season. Defensively, T.J. Watt, who captured his first defensive player of the year award, returns but the rest of the unit still has some glaring holes to fill. They were 20th in points allowed and 24th in yards allowed last season.
Naturally, the Steelers will have their hands full against opponents of the AFC North but also have the Bills, Raiders, Colts, Buccaneers and the Eagles on their slate this season.

Mike Tomlin has never experienced a losing record as a coach for the Steelers but that could change this season with breaking in a rookie at quarterback and handling a suspect defense. However, you can’t dismiss the Steelers’ track record, stability, tradition and they always seem to find a way to perform at a high level even without elite talent. Tomlin has a knack to get the most out of his players and I don’t see that changing this season.
Last year’s record: 9-7-1
My Prediction: 9-8
