Game Preview
After a hard-fought road victory, No. 15 Marquette returns home Tuesday night to take on No. 6 Purdue in a high-stakes nonconference matchup in Milwaukee. Both teams are undefeated, adding extra intrigue to this clash.
Purdue (4-0) secured an 87-78 upset over then-No. 2 Alabama on Friday and now faces its first road challenge of the regular season. Meanwhile, Marquette (4-0) edged out Maryland 78-74 on the road, led by Kam Jones’ impressive 28-point performance.
Purdue head coach Matt Painter recognizes the significance of this road test:
"Playing Marquette on their home court will show us where we stand," Painter said after the Alabama win. "Win or lose, it’s a valuable learning opportunity."
The Boilermakers have won 39 consecutive regular-season nonconference games, tying for the fourth-longest streak in NCAA history. Despite losing key players, including All-American Zach Edey, Purdue remains dominant inside. Trey Kaufman-Renn has stepped up, averaging 18.0 points per game and posting a career-high 26 points against Alabama.
Marquette displayed grit in its road victory over Maryland. Kam Jones led a critical stretch of scoring that secured the win, earning praise from head coach Shaka Smart:
"This is a program-building win for us," Smart said.
The Golden Eagles, averaging 83.0 points per game, rely on Jones’ 24.0 points per contest, supported by David Joplin and Chase Ross, who both contribute over 13 points per game. However, rebounding has been a challenge, as Marquette is being slightly outrebounded by opponents.
Purdue has won three of the last four meetings, including a 78-75 win in last year’s Maui Invitational final. This game provides Marquette a chance to turn the tide on its home floor.
With both teams looking to keep their unbeaten streak alive, this game promises to be a pivotal early-season test for two of college basketball’s top squads.
