Purdue: The Giant, The Myth, The Bucket Machine
Purdue rolls into Piscataway with all the confidence of a team that has spent the past few weeks treating opponents like they wandered into the wrong gym. And front and center in this Purdue show is Daniel Jacobsen, the seven foot four skyscraper with the softest touch since fresh laundry.
Jacobsen has made nineteen straight shots. Nineteen. That is not a shooting streak, that is sorcery. The man has missed one shot in the past three weeks and even that was probably because the ball got bored. He has been dunking, flipping in hooks, catching lobs like he is grabbing groceries off a high shelf and generally making life miserable for defenders who are roughly the size of his kneecaps.
He is shooting nearly seventy four percent from the field, which in basketball terms is the equivalent of finishing a crossword in under a minute and spelling every word correctly. He blocks shots, he rebounds, and he even survived a fractured tibia last year to return as Purdue’s most dangerous bench cheat code.
Around him, Purdue has a full buffet of scorers. Fletcher Loyer drops buckets from everywhere. Trey Kaufman Renn grabs double digit boards like it is a hobby. Braden Smith is handing out assists like a casino handing out free drink tickets. Purdue is undefeated and winning by margins so large the box scores need seat belts.
Rutgers: The Spoiler Specialists
Rutgers is five and three, which does not sound terrifying until you remember one thing. Rutgers loves beating number one teams more than students love skipping an 8am lecture. They have taken down a top ranked Purdue squad twice in the past three seasons and it is something they still bring up at every social gathering.
Emmanuel Ogbole is the current Scarlet Knight on fire, fresh off a twenty one point, thirteen rebound domination in Las Vegas. He is strong, energetic and probably still angry that his coach yelled at him before the game. Dylan Grant leads the scoring with over fifteen a night while Tariq Francis helps keep the offense from resembling a traffic jam.
Rutgers at home is scrappy. Rutgers at home against a top team is borderline chaotic. They defend hard, they fight through every possession and they fully believe they can ruin someone’s week.
Prediction
Purdue is simply too big, too talented and too overwhelming across forty minutes. Rutgers brings energy and will have moments, but Purdue is playing like a team that wants to stay number one for a long time.
