Game Preview

The last two teams remaining west of the Missouri River are set to clash along the Pacific Coast in a heated matchup.

The Los Angeles Dodgers, boasting the best record in MLB, will face off against the San Diego Padres, the hottest team since the All-Star break, in what promises to be an intense National League Division Series starting Saturday.

The Dodgers secured their playoff spot with a remarkable 20-run victory over the Miami Marlins on September 19, a day that also featured Shohei Ohtani’s historic performance—six hits, three home runs, two stolen bases, and ten RBIs—which marked his first playoff appearance.

"It’s always been my childhood dream to play in important games," Ohtani said through interpreter Will Ireton, expressing his excitement about the upcoming playoffs. "The thrill of this moment is greater than anything else."

While Ohtani and the New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge are the stars to watch, the Padres have proven to be a formidable team, posting a 43-20 record since the All-Star break and sweeping the Atlanta Braves in the wild-card round.

Despite finishing second to the Dodgers in the NL West with a 98-64 record, the Padres held their own, winning the season series against Los Angeles for the first time since 2010, going 8-5 overall.

"We’ve had a lot of success against the Dodgers, and we’re ready," said Padres’ Jurickson Profar, who enjoyed a breakout season with a .280 average, 24 homers, and 85 RBIs.

The Padres will start right-hander Dylan Cease in the series opener, who finished the regular season with a 14-11 record and a 3.47 ERA, boasting a 1-0 record with a 3.38 ERA in two starts against the Dodgers.

While Ohtani had a stellar season, hitting .326 with a .922 OPS against the Padres, he has faced Cease before, going 4-for-15 with two home runs.

"He’s a great player having a historic year, but we have a solid plan," Padres manager Mike Shildt remarked about Cease facing Ohtani.

The Dodgers, however, have dealt with injuries, as Tyler Glasnow and Clayton Kershaw are sidelined. Right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto will start Game 1 after recovering from a shoulder injury, having previously struggled against the Padres.

Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman hasn’t played since September 26 due to an ankle injury, and starting shortstop Miguel Rojas is also recovering from a groin injury. Both players aim to participate in the series but may not be at full strength.

"Unfinished business resonates with our guys," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "We need to translate that into action on the field."
